First Day of Kindergarten

Kyler started Kindergarten this week. At the end of his pre-K year, he was not looking forward to going to kindergarten at all. This kid is not a fan of change. Little by little he has gotten used to the idea and even excited about it. By the time it was the first day of school it was no big deal. He got up, got ready, took a picture without complaint, and walked right into his classroom like he'd done it a thousand times. He hadn't even met his new teacher at that point. One thing he wasn't sure he was on board with was school lunch. I tried to convince him it would be awesome because they sometimes have bierocks and stromboli at school (which are his favorites), to which he got sad and said he only wanted mine because they are the best. I'm not sure if that was more of a compliment or a guilt trip because I've been cooking less over the summer.

Grandma picked him up from school and I called shortly after to see how his day went. He said he had a hamburger for lunch with apples and chocolate milk and some chicken and rice and some ketchup for part of it. (I later read the lunch menu - the apples were actually pears and I think there was a triangular shaped hash brown that he thought was chicken and rice - too funny!) He said he ate almost all of it. After he was done with talking to me he asked to talk to Myelle which was adorable. I think he missed her. He also said later that in the classroom they put all of their school supplies away. And he told us a few times that he loves his teacher so much. He's off to a great start!

Sweet Brother

Sure, Kyler and Myelle have their differences - they sometimes fight like brother and sister. Totally normal. But they also have a great deal of concern for one another, particularly Kyler for Myelle. He has always gotten upset when she cries and he begs us not to discipline her in any way when she's naughty. But one night in a hotel, we walked into the room after they fell asleep and saw them sleeping like this:

Myelle had been coughing in her sleep and I think Kyler put his hand on her to help calm her or make sure she was okay. He is such a sweetheart and melts my heart. I hope he stays this way with his concern for others. Makes me proud!

A New Pet

Kyler has been obsessed with snakes and other reptiles. He has been begging us to let him get a corn snake as a pet. "They make really good pets, Mom!" I was able to convince him otherwise by telling him that they eat mice, and I don't want mice in my house.

Well, the other weekend his uncle Brent came by with a baby turtle in a glass aquarium. Before I knew it, Brent had left but the turtle remained. Kyler informed me that it was a red-eared slider turtle and Brent gave it to him. Great, a new pet to care for. Just a tip to all you uncles with no kids of your own... before gifting a pet to your nephews and nieces you should probably check with their mom and dad first.

Dirty House?

Grandma Debbie swept her floor today and showed our little scientist, Kyler, her dust pan full of dirt. She said, "Boy, my house is dirty!" Kyler acted like it was okay and it wasn't her fault. He said, "Grandma, that's because of gravity." I have no idea how where he came up with this but I like it. It's going to be my new excuse for everything.

Breakfast Pizza

I made a pretty good breakfast pizza this morning (sausage and gravy covered with scrambled eggs and cheese as toppings) and Kyler asked if I got the breakfast somewhere or made it. I told him I made it and asked if he thought I had made it or gotten it from somewhere. He replied, "I thought you got it somewhere like McDonald's." Quite the compliment...

Hankees

Kyler: "I wish the Hankee's didn't win. I think they play better at Hankee Stadium and the Royals play better at the K."

Mama couldn't get herself to tell him they are the Yankee's. It's just too funny (plus, it's the Yankee's).

5th Birthday

Kyler celebrated his fifth birthday a couple of days early since his cousins, Holden and Ally, were in Kansas. We had a mini party at their grandparents house since Mama and Dada were on their way back home from a trip to Mexico. He got lots of fun gifts and we had dinosaur ice cream cake from Dairy Queen.

On his actual birthday, Mama threw together a quick and easy "construction" cake (good thing since the cakes broke coming out of the pans). Grandma and Papa came over to help celebrate.

Before his birthday, he wasn't very excited about being 5 and going to kindergarten. He's a little sad about growing up.

The Thinker

Kyler has recently had some questions and thoughts that we found pretty amazing for a four-year-old.

He was talking with Myelle about people having babies in their tummies. He said that we all came from somebody's tummy. Then he immediately turned to me and said, "all babies come from tummies but where did the first baby come from?" And so we got the bible out.

Later in the week he was over at my parents' house and my dad had his boat hooked up to his truck on the driveway. He looked at one side, then walked over and looked at the other side of the boat. He said to my dad, "Papa, when you unhook your boat, it will tip with only two wheels on the trailer."

He has told us before that his brain just never stops. We agree.

Sidewalk Chalk City

The snow is almost melted and Kyler is ready to be outside. He had days of fun with this sidewalk chalk city.

No Markers Allowed

Kyler saw this sign and said, "You're not supposed to bring markers in here!" We love his innocence.

Forrest Gump

The other night we watched a little bit of Forrest Gump but changed the channel when a more adult scene started. A few minutes later Kyler asked us to put "Tree Stump" back on. Forrest/Tree, Gump/Stump... funny the way four-year-old minds operate. :)

Homework

Kyler was stomping around after school today. I asked if he was grumpy and he said he was disappointed because he didn't get any homework. He is now happily working away with the color word worksheets I found online. I love my little nerd!

Ghost Story

Recently I was explaining ghost stories to Kyler and he gave it a try. I thought he was pretty successful with those expressive eyes and the way he used his voice to really sell the story. :)

First Day of School

Kyler is in pre-Kindergarten this year. Unlike last year, he was (and is) very excited to go to school. He goes three mornings each week (last year was just Tues/Thurs). On Fridays he has to wear a Sts. Peter & Paul School polo with khaki pants along with the rest of the school. The main reason for this is that they have an all-school mass on Friday mornings which Kyler will start attending once per month after Christmas break.

Here he is on the first day of school. He was cooperative for pictures and ready to go!

His little sister thought she should be part of the activities too, so she grabbed her backpack and came out for pictures.

He had an assignment to do and was eager to start on his homework as soon as he got home from school that first day. What a good student!

Baptismal Birthday

We celebrated at home with Grandma and Papa coming over for dinner and chocolate cake. Kyler received a gift and he decided he wanted his charitable donation to go to help poor children. As such, we made a $100 donation in honor of his baptismal birthday to Save the Children's Syrian relief fund. Unfortunately it seems we did not take any pictures this year. Oops!

Kylerisms - The End of the Calendar

This is sort of morbid but Kyler is a very inquisitive kid and is also curious about death/heaven...
K - When will we die?Me - We don't know. K - Probably when we get to the end of the calendar?Me - (lol) No, we will just get another calendar. K - Okay. Then I hear him praying quietly. K - God, please can I go to heaven? Okay, thank you.And then he immediately fell asleep on the floor where he was playing. My first thought was, "I hope he wakes up." When his dada got home, I told him and he immediately went to check on Ky-man.
